The gray line shows the average of the primary metric inside the panel.

Using the selected date range, the trend line shows  users how many days data tracked above or below the line. For instance, if the period change for activities is red it may not be much of a concern if the recent trend is above the average line.

You can see this trend line in the Email, Cadence Process, Calls, Other Step, LinkedIn, and Activity panels.
