Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why did the company location routing rule not apply when it should have?
A: When using routing rules based on company location, we see customers who set up rules with Company Headquarter State/Country and US State/Country in the same rule.
Usually, the goal is to route only on Headquarters location, but having multiple conditions can cause an issue with people travelling or working from different locations.
For example: Drift is headquartered in Massachusetts. If an employee travels to Portugal, the rule shown below will not apply anymore as the employee would physically be in Portugal.

Here are the best practices to ensure your rules route properly:
- Use Company Headquarters only if you want to route based on company location
- Use US State / Country only if you want to route based on physical location
Q: Why did the wrong company location routing rule match?
A: There are times when a site visitor comes in and they are headquartered in a specific state but the rule says it matched a different location which leaves you confused.
Typically this happens when the visitor doesn’t have a known email address so we are going off of company information from an IP address. Drift Intel will prioritize business email information because it is known to be more accurate than IP.
How you can ensure you are using the most accurate location information:
- Email capture skill before the routing
- Use drift.identify on your site to make sure you capture user information. For more information about drift.identify check out our help doc here: How To Build Bot Playbooks
Q: Why did the physical location routing rule not match?
A: Drift uses the end user responses to find the IP address. From there, Drift will find their physical location for routing. To help Drift identify the IP address, we suggest you insert a skill with a text or button response in your work flow. e.g., Looking to book a meeting? Have questions about [product name]?
