If there is a certain attribute you want to add to your contact records in Drift that you are hoping to use in Playbooks or for your other workflows, you can create custom attributes within Drift and add them to all your contact records.
In order for these attributes to be filled out, you need to supply the data into Drift. If you are importing a CSV with custom attributes, make sure you create the attribute in Drift before importing your CSV as that custom attribute data needs a place to be mapped to when importing.
Billing Plan: Custom Contact Attributes are available on all Drift plans
In this article, we'll cover:
Note: Once custom attributes are created, they cannot be edited or deleted, only archived. If you need to rename or change the type of an attribute we suggest you archive the existing attribute and make a new one with its own unique name.
1. Go to Visitors > Contact Settings and click the blue button that says Create new attribute.
2. Choose what type of attribute you'd like to create.

You can see all your custom attributes in the Custom Attributes tab within the Contact Settings page
When Uploading a CSV, you will be able to map any Columns in your CSV to specific Drift Attributes.
The data read from the file will be listed in a table below the title Map Columns to Attributes. This will list the column title, a preview of the data in that column, and the associated Drift attribute.

Check that the columns in your file are aligned with the proper Drift attributes. They may be auto matched but make sure that you double check for accuracy! If a column does not correspond to a Drift attribute, it will default to unchecked.
Any column or Drift Attribute can be manually changed.
- If you have a column that you do not wish to map to a drift attribute, simply do not select an attribute to map to and we won't map that column into Drift.
- Attributes can be edited through the drop down menu under the title Drift Attributes.
Any unmatched columns will be ignored when it comes time to import.
Not only do you have total control of which attributes you choose to show in the contact sidebar within the conversations view, but you can also rearrange the order of the attributes displayed.
To do so, head to Contacts > Settings or click here! Click and hold the three horizontal bars next to any of the attributes on the right side and drag them to your desired location. Click Save Changes and you're done!

Attribute mapping allows for the information that you collect from your LeadBots to be added to your contacts - making it easier for you to see qualifying information about your leads right from the conversation or contact view in your Drift account.
These attributes can sync to Salesforce or you can use it to send targeted messages to people when they come back to your site.
- First, create a new contact attribute to map, unless you already have one in mind.
- Then understand do you want the button text as it is written to be passed over as the attribute? Or do you want the button to trigger an attribute to be applied on to the user.
To set up the button text being written as is to be the attribute text click on your Question node > Responses and scroll down to Save response to contact record. Use the dropdown menu to select the attribute you want to map.

To apply an attribute to the user based on the specific button they click, click on your Question node > Responses and click on the button you want to map the response for. Scroll down to Triggered actions and select Save information to contact attributes.

You can track different attributes for each LeadBot question, so that each piece of information you collect throughout the conversation will be added into the contact record!
To map typed responses from site visitors, make sure you have at least one keyword group!
